Prevent the Closure of Balmedie Library

Prevent the Closure of Balmedie Library

The Issue

I was lucky to grow up a street away from my local library and I know first-hand the importance of this local institution for children. Libraries remain pivotal in nurturing a child's curiosity, providing them not just with books, but doorways to different worlds and perspectives. As our economy grapples with rising prices, books, and the knowledge they hold, must remain accessible to everyone, not meted out as luxury commodities.

However, our beloved Balmedie Library is at risk of closure. This doesn't just threaten our children's access to literature but also jeopardises our community spirit. Libraries, particularly ones like Balmedie, serve as community hubs - places where people come together to engage, learn and grow.  Libraries also stimulate local economies by providing free access to materials and resources for job seekers, startups, and entrepreneurs.

Finally, libraries are one of the last free places for social connection to help combat loneliness in our society across all age groups helping our mental health. Research shows that governments need to increase library funding and programs, especially for the youth as COVID caused a whole generation to lose that early library intervention which brings not only the wonder of walking into a library but also the lack of knowledge with words and reading which is showing in primary schools. Due to both parents having to work in this climate unfortunately some children do not learn the pleasure of reading from home.

We must save Balmedie Library to ensure our children, and the larger community, continue to enjoy this valuable resource and preserve the cultural fabric of our Village. By signing this petition, we call on our local government to protect Balmedie Library from closure and to safeguard our right to accessible knowledge. Your signature is a vote for the future generations' right to literature and learning. Your voice matters, please sign the petition.
