My childhood memories are deeply intertwined with the presence of the river dams in the city of Albion. These dams are the scenic beauties where people have been capturing significant moments of their lives. They are a popular spot for senior photos or prom photos and are treasured part of our local city. The attempt to remove them is not just an act of disassembling concretes and bricks; it’s tearing away the spirit of our community. 

Along with this sentimental value, these dams also offer several ecological benefits. Studies suggest that dams play a critical role in maintaining water quality, regulating river flows, preserving wildlife and fisheries, and controlling flooding (World Commission on Dams, 2000). With the potential loss of these benefits, this planned removal is not just a personal loss, but a loss for our entire community and ecosystem.

We acknowledge that there are considerations around the aging infrastructure of dams and potential safety concerns. However, we firmly believe that there could alternate solutions that both guarantee safety and preserve our river dams.
