The Issue

Early Birds has been an integral part of my life as a student, allowing me to engage with advanced music in a way that regular choir sessions can't. The opportunities for growth and learning with zero periods are immense, and removing them would take away an important component of what makes my education fulfilling. This isn't just about me; many students benefit from these early morning options, whether through choir, band, or other enrichment activities. Zero periods enable students to pursue their passions seriously while still managing their academic responsibilities.

However, the Beaverton School District is considering canceling these precious zero periods, citing issues of inclusivity. While the intention to make school programs accessible to all is commendable, eliminating these special opportunities rather than addressing accessibility directly is not the solution. For instance, early morning choir and band sessions have been incredibly rewarding for countless students who choose to participate. These are not required courses; they are elective, offering room for personal growth and skill advancement.

To truly make zero periods inclusive, the district could organize transportation solutions. Implementing buses or carpool systems would ensure students without personal transportation can also benefit from these unique educational offerings. This approach would uphold inclusivity without stripping students of the quality experiences and achievements they gain from these programs.

The option for advanced endeavors in choir, jazz band, and possibly others should remain. Cancelling them sets a precedent that challenges inclusivity in its own right by taking away opportunities from those who wish to challenge themselves. Zero periods are not only beneficial academically but also support students’ emotional and social development.

It's vital for the decision-makers within Beaverton School District to listen to the voices of students and parents alike. By retaining zero periods and providing transportation solutions, we can maintain inclusivity while nurturing students' passions and academic growth.

Join me in urging the Beaverton School District to reconsider the cancellation of zero periods and strive for a more inclusive solution that benefits all. Please sign this petition to help preserve these valuable opportunities for every student. Together, we can make our voices heard and ensure that education remains both inclusive and enriching for everyone involved.
