Tell the Egg Industry to Stop Brutally Killing Thousands of Chicks
The Issue
The lives of male chickens at many egg companies worldwide begin and end on the same day. In some facilities in the US, this is about 150,000 chicks every day. The males are apparently not profitable enough to be raised for meat, so are instead inhumanely slaughtered.
Upon being roughly segregated based on sex, the males are flung down a chute and whipped around only to be ground alive in a macerator moments later. Occasionally, the chickens tumble through the sorting machine and are abandoned on the cold floor or in gaps in the machinery to die.
Aside from the callous culling of these chickens, the factory workers - forced to commit remorseless acts of brutality for a living - have reported suffering from symptoms of PTSD including (but not limited to) extreme anxiety, domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse and social withdrawal.
Birds and animals alike experience the excruciating sting of pain in much the same way humans do. Thus - in order to prevent the atrocious massacre of hundreds of thousands of innocent chicks, as well as to protect the mental well-being of employees in the food industry - we demand that the practice of culling chickens is abolished.
A viable alternative for companies entails the employment of techniques such as embryonic sexing of chickens, so that embryonic development can be terminated for males; then, the chickens will never have to suffer such a horrible death.
