Prevent the Ban on Dallas Horse Carriages

Prevent the Ban on Dallas Horse Carriages
The Issue
Preserve Dallas's Heritage: Say No to the Ban on Horse Carriages
Horse carriages have been an integral part of Dallas's rich history and culture for many years. Offering a unique experience, they attract both tourists and locals, contributing significantly to our local economy. However, a current proposal threatens to ban these horse carriages in Dallas, TX. This ban jeopardizes not only our cultural heritage but also the livelihoods of those who operate these carriages.
Horse-drawn carriage businesses, according to the Carriage Operators of North America (CONA), contribute over $19 million annually to local economies nationwide. In Dallas, this industry not only provides jobs for hundreds of people but also supports local feed stores, farriers, veterinarians, and more.
The welfare of horses is often cited as a reason for such bans. However, CONA assures that their members adhere strictly to animal welfare guidelines, ensuring that horses are well-cared for and work under humane conditions. As Brian High, owner of North Star Carriage and one of the largest carriage businesses in the area put it:
"When you have horses that give you a certain camaraderie, you don't repurpose them, you take care of them till they are gone and you are thankful you had the chance to meet a horse like that. It’s not the most financially smart thing to do, but it is what horse people do!"
Dallas carriages play a vital role in tourism and the economy. Furthermore, in many cultures, such as in Indian weddings, horse-drawn carriages are a traditional and essential element. Imposing a ban not only disrupts these cultural practices, but also raises questions about disregarding cultural heritage.
It's important to address that some arguments against horse carriages often rely on emotional appeal, using outdated or selective imagery to depict the industry negatively. However, the reality for most carriage companies is quite different. These companies treat their horses with the utmost care, often times treated as family. The horses are well-fed, hydrated, and given ample rest. They have access to open land for roaming and receive regular health check-ups. Moreover, when these horses are no longer able or willing to work, they are not discarded but continue to be well-cared for.
We urge city officials not to enact this ban without thoroughly considering its impact on our community's economy, culture, and the stringent measures already in place to ensure animal welfare. Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving this vital part of Dallas's history and in supporting the ethical and compassionate care of these noble animals.
