The Issue

In Spring Hill, Kansas, our community is facing a significant change that could impact the safety and quality of life for our residents, particularly our children. The proposal to rezone a Rural Residential area to M1 industrial zoning for a data center is a cause of great concern for many of us. This proposed site is less than three miles from three schools, which poses potential risks related to increased traffic, noise pollution, and environmental concerns.

The proximity of this industrial zoning to our schools could lead to a substantial rise in heavy vehicle traffic, thereby putting our children at risk. Increased traffic around school zones is already a major safety concern, and by permitting industrial operations so close, we invite further hazard. Furthermore, the noise and environmental disruptions typical of industrial centers could substantially hamper the learning environment children need.

From an environmental perspective, the establishment of a data center in an area initially designated for quiet residential living could bring adverse effects. Data centers are known to consume massive amounts of electricity, leading to increased demand on local grids and potential environmental degradation. Such a shift undermines the peaceful, green ethos that our residential zones stand for.

Our rural residential areas are zoned in a manner to promote a specific way of life: one that is peaceful, safe, and centered on family living. The reallocation of this zoning to industrial sharply contrasts these values. Spring Hill thrives because of its unique balance between development and maintaining a high quality of life for its residents. Allowing a data center in this area threatens to upset this delicate balance.

We understand the importance of technological progress and the demands it brings. However, sustainable development is vital. We urge the local government officials to consider alternative locations for the data center where its operation will not intrude on our residential life and will remain consistent with existing industrial locales.

Join us in safeguarding our community's way of life and ensuring the safety and well-being of our children. Please sign this petition urging the Spring Hill city council, the planning commission, and the Mayor to maintain the current Rural Residential zoning in Spring Hill and  protect our schools & neighborhoods from industrial encroachment.
