The Issue

Bluffton, SC, is home to a precious and historic spot—the Linear Trail. This old railroad bed is more than just a walking trail; it's a thriving ecosystem and sanctuary for countless species of wildlife. It is intricately connected to the New River Ecosystem, profoundly impacting the rich biodiversity of our town. For years, this trail has provided a peaceful haven for residents and visitors alike, offering a slice of untouched nature in our rapidly developing area.

There is now a proposal to pave this trail, fundamentally altering a space that is cherished by our community. Paving would disrupt the natural habitat, endangering the species that depend on this corridor. The well-being of Bluffton’s wildlife, including birds, small mammals, reptiles, and plants, hangs in the balance. Paving will not only destroy the aesthetic and environmental value of the trail but will also sever an important ecological link within the New River system.

Development is crucial for progress, yet it should not come at such a high ecological cost. We must seek a balance between growth and preservation. I propose alternative solutions, such as improving signage or regular maintenance, which can enhance the trail’s usability without compromising its natural state. Creating awareness through community-led conservation workshops can further protect this vital resource.

Let's preserve Bluffton's remarkable Linear Trail in its natural form for future generations, ensuring the continued survival of its unique ecosystem. Stand with us in petitioning our state Governor to intervene in using state funds to pave the linear trail. Furthermore, to intervene and put a stop to the entire process of paving the trail ant all. This process needs to be stopped to safeguard our the linear trails natural beauty and ecological heritage.

Please sign this petition to help us save Bluffton’s Linear Trail, protecting both its wildlife and the natural experience it provides.
