My home, Kerala, India, is on the brink of a serious catastrophe with the looming threat of the Mullaperiyar Dam failure. Kerala, known as God's Own Country, with its pristine natural beauty, rich culture and warm-hearted people, is home to 34 million individuals who stand an extremely high risk from the imminent threat that the 126-year old storage structure poses. The dam, originally designed for 50 years, now survives in a precariously decrepit condition, marking more than two and a half times its intended lifespan. According to experts, a failure can lead to loss of millions of lives due to flooding and create unprecedented economic damages across the state (Source: Dam Safety Organisation, Government of Kerala). This is not just a call to mitigation but a desperate plea for immediate steps against potentially grave human and environmental consequences. Hence, we urge the pertinent authorities to carry out immediate risk assessment, undertake necessary repair works, and devise an effective disaster management plan in case of dam failure.
