The Issue

The decision to relocate M&S from its current location in The Ridings to City Fields in Wakefield is deeply concerning for many of us in the community. M&S has been more than just a store; it has served as a social hub, especially for the elderly, who regularly visit to shop, dine at the cafe, and spend quality time with friends. This move threatens to destroy that sense of community by making it difficult for them to access these essential social interactions.

The elderly population, many of whom rely on public transportation, will find it challenging to travel further to City Fields. Without the familiarity and convenience of the current location, their day-to-day routines and social lives will be severely disrupted. Moreover, the absence of a cafe in the new M&S store will remove a significant point of socialization for many, pushing them further into isolation.

This move also has wider economic implications for Wakefield. The relocation would cause job losses for employees who may not be able to transition to the new site. Additionally, it would force residents to travel to White Rose in Leeds for clothing or cafe needs, which is not a viable option for everyone. The Ridings, already struggling to thrive, would lose a major attraction, potentially leading to more decline in a year that has already been tough for local businesses.

For the sake of our community, and the well-being of countless individuals who depend on M&S as their cornerstone for socializing and shopping, we must take a stand. Keep M&S in The Ridings and preserve the spirit of our community.

By signing this petition, we can demonstrate the collective opposition to this move and urge M&S and city officials to reconsider their decision. Your support is crucial in maintaining the vibrancy and cohesiveness of Wakefield.
