Uniformity, respect, and a safe environment are essential for the healthy development of young female athletes. Unfortunately, Mr. Darby O'Reilly, currently associated with Walled Lake Central’s girls athletic program, and particularly his role in coaching tennis, threatens these core values.

Mr. O'Reilly has shown a continued pattern of favoritism toward certain athletes, prioritizing those who seem more susceptible to influence. This creates an inequitable atmosphere, where young women who bravely voice concerns about fairness are overshadowed and demoted, stifling both their athletic and personal growth. This is not the environment we want to foster for our daughters and young female athletes.

Worse, there have been several complaints lodged by members of the tennis team. These complaints highlight uncomfortable and inappropriate behavior, including unwarranted comments about athletes’ physical appearances and unwanted physical contact, such as unsolicited hugs and touching of hair. This behavior is not only unprofessional but harmful, breeding a space where young women feel unsafe and invalidated.

As a community, we must hold accountable those in positions of influence, particularly those who mold young minds and character. Mr. O'Reilly’s behavior is inconsistent with the dignity and respect that should be afforded to all students under his leadership. Allowing this to continue is to endorse a culture of discomfort and inequality.

We kindly urge the administration at Walled Lake Central to take swift action in ensuring that Mr. Darby O'Reilly is not given any position within the school associated with girls athletics, particularly the tennis team. By doing so, we take a critical step toward ensuring a fair and respectful environment where all athletes can thrive.
