Prevent Construction of Major Retail Center Near Park and Residential Area

The Issue

I live in a peaceful neighborhood, where children and pets play in the park and families enjoy quiet nights. Unfortunately, this might not be the case any longer. There is a proposal for a major retail shopping center right next to the Stonebridge Park and residential area. This development will significantly increase noise levels, lower property values, cause major traffic congestion, and potentially attract an unwelcome homeless population.

Studies show that major retail establishments in residential areas increase traffic by at least 30% (Source: City Development Studies Journal). Added to our already heavy traffic and roads that are in dire need of repair, this could result in much heavier congestion, more vehicular accidents, and prolonged travel times.

Furthermore, according to the National Association of Realtors, property values in areas proximate to large retail outlets can decrease by up to 10%. This is another significant factor to consider in preventing the construction of the proposed shopping center.

Not only is this project going to affect our property values and traffic, but it will also increase noise pollution dramatically. Research conducted by the World Health Organization warns of the health implications of persistently elevated noise levels, including stress-related illnesses, sleep disturbance, cognitive impairment among children, and even cardiovascular disease.

Finally, the new retail center could potentially attract a homeless population which can create additional challenges for local law enforcement and social services (Source: Homelessness Research Institute).
Mary’s Vineyard is a prime example of a retail center populated with homeless and mentally ill inhabitants with open air drug use.
We believe in development and progress, but not at the expense of our peace, safety, and community welfare. Reject the proposal of the major retail shopping center near our park and residential area now. Help us protect our neighborhood and the quality of life. Please sign and share this petition.

Please consider attending the Visalia City Council meeting on April 14, 2025, at 7pm to voice your concerns.
