The Issue

Our neighborhood is a family-oriented community that has managed to maintain its charm and warmth over the years. As a resident, I can personally attest to the peace and safety that make this place feel like home. Every morning, I enjoy seeing children playing in the park and families enjoying evening walks with their dogs. This picturesque setting is at risk of being disrupted if a proposed 24-hour gas station and liquor store are allowed to open in our midst (corner of Alameda and Powhaton).

While we are not opposed to development and welcome new businesses that enhance our community, such as coffee shops, sit-down restaurants, veterinarians, grocery stores, or small convenience stores, a gas station and liquor store are not in line with the values and atmosphere we all cherish here. The introduction of these establishments would inevitably lead to increased traffic congestion and noise, negatively impacting the quality of life and property values that we have worked so hard to cultivate and maintain.

Safety and security are paramount here. With increased traffic and potentially disoriented individuals visiting the liquor store at all hours, our streets could become hazardous. The peace that this neighborhood currently enjoys would be replaced by the constant drone of vehicles and disturbances at odd hours.

Moreover, studies have shown that proximity to a liquor store can lead to an increase in crime rates and public disturbances, which could compromise the safety and integrity of our neighborhood. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Urban Health found that neighborhoods with liquor stores experience an increase in crime. We cannot allow this risk to overshadow the safe haven we have created for our families.

We are urging our local council to consider our community's unique needs and the potential negative impacts before approving any permits for a gas station and 24-hour liquor store. Instead, we encourage the pursuit of development projects that align with the community's values and enhance its livability and family-friendly atmosphere.

Please help us preserve the tranquility and safety of our neighborhood by signing this petition to show your support against the proposed gas station and liquor store development. Together, we can ensure our neighborhood remains a peaceful and nurturing environment for current and future generations.
