The Issue

I am deeply concerned about United Utilities' recent proposals that would see them commercialise Rivington and Anglezarke in the heart of Lancashire. and that go against the aims of the Lever Park Act.  In August they allowed an Aqua Park to be installed on Lower Rivington Reservoir, despite all the dangers they themselves claim about entering cold water. That alone cost £20 per person. it also goes against their own website claims not to encourage more visitors to an already pressured rural community.

Having cherished this beautiful region for all my life, both for its stunning landscapes and the serene escapes it offers, I believe these areas should remain free and accessible to all, without the added burden of commercial interests.

For years, Rivington and Anglezarke have been sanctuaries for families, nature enthusiasts, and locals seeking the peace and tranquility of countryside walks or by the reservoirs. Introducing commercial enterprises in these areas threatens this sanctuary, shifting the focus from conservation and natural beauty to corporate profit and extra burdens on local infrastructure.

Moreover, the introduction of commercial activities can significantly increase foot traffic and motorised vehicles, leading to inevitable ecological damage and disruption of wildlife habitats. Rivington and Anglezarke's unique biodiversity must be preserved. Sources like the Wildlife Trust emphasize the fragile nature of the area's habitats, underscoring the need for protection.

Safety is another key concern. With commercialisation comes increased risk, particularly around the reservoirs. Cold water has claimed lives in many such bodies of water, posing dangers to inexperienced swimmers or those tempted by leisure activities promoted by tourism ventures. The first heatwave this May saw far too many young people drowning, tempted by cooling down in water.

What we propose is simple: leave Rivington and Anglezarke as natural havens. We urge United Utilities and local council members to hear our plea and prioritize the preservation of these landscapes over profit-driven projects and also support the rural community.

By signing this petition, you stand with the local community in safeguarding our cherished countryside from irreversible changes due to commercialisation. Together, let's ensure Rivington and Anglezarke remain untouched for future generations. Please sign and help protect our natural heritage.
