The Colonial Beach Town Council is considering a proposal to allow dogs on the beach area from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, seven days a week. This decision could have serious implications for our community and environment. Many dog owners, unfortunately, do not clean up after their pets. According to Pet Waste Management, one gram of dog waste can contain 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, which are known to cause cramps, diarrhea, intestinal illness, and serious kidney disorders in humans. If left unchecked on our beaches, this could pose significant health risks for beachgoers and negatively impact local wildlife habitats. We urge the council members to reconsider this decision and prioritize public health and environmental preservation over convenience for pet owners.
