Prevent Budget Cuts from Eliminating the Spanish Passport Program in Baltimore County Public Schools
The Issue
As parents and community members of Baltimore County, we have witnessed the positive impact that the Spanish Passport Program has had on our children's lives. This program has not only provided our kids with early education on Spanish language but also broadened their cultural understanding, preparing them for an increasingly globalized world. Our children deserve this invaluable opportunity. Currently, 4th graders receive 30 minutes of Spanish education once a week and 5th graders receive 50 minutes once a week.
However, due to proposed budget cuts within Baltimore County Public Schools, this critical program is at risk of being eliminated. It is disheartening to see such a beneficial program being targeted for financial reasons. As of now- 31 schools will provide the program to 5th grade students for the 24-25 school year and then the program is set to be eliminated.
According to a study by American Councils for International Education, early language learning improves cognitive abilities and leads to better academic performance overall (American Councils for International Education). Cutting programs like the Elementary Spanish Passport will deprive our children of these benefits.
We urge you to reconsider these budget cuts and prioritize our children's education. The future success of our students should not be compromised due to budget constraints. Please stand with us in protecting the Spanish Passport Program – because every child deserves access to comprehensive language education.
