The Issue

In the past year, I have had the privilege to connect deeply with the monks of a monastery in Bhutan by supporting their efforts to introduce vegan dairy alternatives in the country. We did this to uphold the Buddhist values of compassion that are so dear to Bhutanese culture. Bhutan is unique; it is the only nation in the world without a slaughterhouse and is a beacon of hope for a future where kindness to all sentient beings prevails. This philosophy aligns with the predominantly vegetarian practices within the country.

However, recent developments threaten this unique status. The Bhutanese government is considering authorizing and building the nation's first slaughterhouse. This initiative is designed to encourage meat consumption and counter the steadfast efforts to maintain the country's vegan and vegetarian traditions. Such a move not only jeopardizes animals' lives but contradicts the essence of Bhutanese values based on Buddhism, which emphasizes non-violence and compassion as core principles.

The introduction of a slaughterhouse in Bhutan could lead to significant changes by undermining the country's long-established tradition of non-violence towards animals. It could spur an increase in meat consumption and gradually erode the compassionate ethos that Bhutan proudly upholds. This may consequently influence other nations looking to Bhutan as a model of peaceful coexistence with nature.

Strengthening our position in maintaining a slaughter-free Bhutan requires a collective voice from individuals around the globe who cherish compassion and wish to preserve the sanctity of life. We urge the Bhutanese government to reconsider this decision and harness alternatives that preserve the nation's cultural heritage while respecting animal rights, such as promoting locally produced plant-based foods, which could offer healthier, cruelty-free choices for the Bhutanese people. While the monks of Bhutan are gently encouraging people to go vegan through acts of compassion, they cannot participate in acts of "activism" themselves, and hence cannot start a petition. But I can! And hence, I have. :)

Your support can make a difference in ensuring that Bhutan remains a symbol of peace and compassion for animals. Please join us in urging the government to choose a path aligned with their centuries-old values, a path that continues to inspire the world to embrace kindness and non-violence. Sign this petition to keep Bhutan slaughterhouse-free and promote a future grounded in compassion and respect for all living beings.
