The Issue

I am deeply concerned about BC Housing's proposed plan to construct a homeless shelter on River Drive, New Westminster, BC, where substance use will be permitted on-site, including the injection of drugs. This decision has the potential to undermine the safety, stability, and well-being of our entire community.

Firstly, by allowing substance use within the shelter premises, BC Housing inadvertently encourages and normalizes drug use in a residential area, potentially attracting problematic behavior and increasing crime rates. Nearby residents, including families with children, could be exposed to increased drug-related incidents and criminal activity, which could lead to a decline in property values and a loss of community trust and safety.

Secondly, the integration of individuals, including those who are known criminals, into our neighborhood poses an additional risk. While everyone deserves a chance to rehabilitate and integrate back into society, it is crucial that such processes are thoughtfully implemented, with consideration for both the individuals receiving help and the surrounding community.

The government's intent to tackle homelessness and addiction is commendable, yet the approach must ensure the safety of existing neighborhoods and the effective rehabilitation of those in need. As concerned residents, we propose alternative solutions, such as:

1. Establishing the shelter in a more suitable location, away from residential areas, to minimize the direct impact on families and vulnerable community members.
2. Implementing rigorous supervision and strict regulations to manage substance use, emphasizing rehabilitation and support.
3. Increasing transparency and communication between BC Housing and the affected communities to keep citizens informed and involved in decision-making processes.

Safety, transparency, and community collaboration must be at the forefront of this decision. The wellbeing of both the shelter's future residents and the current community is at stake. Join us in urging BC Housing to reconsider their plans and prioritize the safety and security of New Westminster. Please sign this petition to help protect our neighborhood and work towards a solution that truly benefits all involved.
