The Issue

Riana Nel was my only sister, a beloved member of our family whose life was brutally taken by Mauritz Rheeder. She was not just a sister to me, but also like an older sister to my three children, and a cherished daughter to my two elderly parents. Her untimely death has left a void in our lives that can never be filled.

On July 8, 2025, Rheeder is set to appear in court with the possibility of being granted bail. This is a man who has shown no respect for human life, and yet, he might walk free. His actions are a stark reminder of the gender-based violence epidemic plaguing our society. Allowing him to roam free would not only be a massive injustice to Riana's memory but also a peril to the safety of the community.

Statistics from recent studies indicate that granting bail to individuals accused of violent crimes leads to a significant risk of re-offense, particularly in cases involving intimate partner violence. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, over 1 in 4 women will experience severe intimate partner violence in their lifetime. In too many cases, these individuals are allowed back into society where they often continue their cycle of abuse.

We believe that granting bail to Rheeder would undermine the severity of his crime and expose more individuals to potential harm. The judiciary system must take a stand. Justice for Riana means holding her murderer accountable and ensuring he remains in custody where he belongs.

Let's not let Riana's tragic death be in vain. Sign this petition to urge the court to deny bail for Mauritz Rheeder and protect our community from further tragedy. Your support is pivotal in seeking justice for all victims of gender-based violence.
