The time to act is now. The City Council is considering a proposal to double the Town Center's housing density—adding 2,000 new units and increasing building heights up to 85 feet. This would bring the total to 4,000 units.
The Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (DSEIS) is a critical tool for the City Council to assess potential impacts on our community. It evaluates changes to housing, transportation, aesthetics, and natural resources. The final SEIS will guide their decision-making process. The DSEIS evaluating these changes is available here: DSEIS
Key Concerns:
- Traffic Gridlock: Increased density could overwhelm 228th Ave SE and other exit routes, leading to severe congestion.
- School Overcrowding: Lake Washington School District is already at capacity; additional residents may exacerbate this issue and require students to be bussed to Redmond.
- Higher Taxes: Funding for infrastructure improvements, including roads and a proposed town square, could lead to increased taxes.
- Environmental Impact: Development may harm local ecosystems, including the endangered Kokanee salmon in nearby creeks. sammamish.news
- Community Character: The proposed changes may alter the unique suburban character of Sammamish.
