The Issue

As dedicated Sammamish residents, we are gravely concerned about the plan to build high density housing and add 2,000 housing units to the Town Center making a total of 4000 households in the middle of 228th.  This development would significantly worsen traffic and cause severe congestion, overcrowd schools, harm our natural environment and change the character of our town.

An additional 2000 households means significantly more cars on the road, raising safety concerns especially during emergencies. According to the Institute of Traffic Engineers, estimates range 20,000-36,000 additional daily car trips.

Our middle and high schools, which are already overcrowded, may need to bus students to Redmond if LWSD is forced to redistrict due to no other schools planned near 228th and not being able to accommodate potentially thousands of more students.

Additionally, urbanization threatens the trees, lakes, and wildlife and has a direct negative impact on our already overtaxed stormwater and sewer systems.

The council just approved a 6% utility tax. This will generate $11 million in revenue for the city in the first year to make up for the deficit caused by spending $5 million to buy back property from the town center developer and $6 million to fix a road in the town center that is the developer's responsibility. This is not what residents were told when they agreed to the town center plans over a decade ago.

Our current infrastructure is not equipped to handle this. We need to fix our existing streets, ensure safe emergency evacuation routes, and have a plan for our schools before considering adding high density housing.

We ask the city council to reject this plan.
