His threat to use military force against his own citizens who dissent or critique his administration signifies behavior that is not compatible with the standards of our country. Our history of having combated such oppressive, autocratic stances is a testament to the fact that we cannot allow ourselves to compromise our principles for potential trade benefits. Data shows that aligning ourselves with autocratic rulers who oppress their citizens can harm our diplomatic relationships with other democracies (source: Global Democracy Index).
