Stop the use of plastic straws in all fast-food chains and restaurants in the Philippines
The Issue
During the last 5 years, the use of plastic straws contributed alot in water, land, and even in air pollution. Most of these straws are coming from fast-food chains and restaurants and sadly, only few percent of these straws are getting recycled. Most of them are going to lakes, rivers, etc. because people threw their used straws there. Some of them are getting burned and as we all know, burning of plastic causes air pollution.
According to some research, Every year, millions of pounds of plastic waste (most of these plastic waste are straws) flow into the oceans from the coastal region. If present trends continue, it is expected that it will outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050. Also, it takes 500-1000 for plastics to degrade.
Consequences
- Death of marine life and birds
- Harms our environment
- Can cause health problems
- Massive Ocean Pollution
The philosophical view of this petition is environmental justice. It refers to the fair distribution of environmental benefits, as well as the burden of meeting environmental challenges.
Benefits
- Lessen land, air, and water pollution
- Decreases the number of death of marine life and other animals
- Decreases the risk of health problems because of pollution
For me, the solution to this issue is to ban the use of plastic straws in the Philippines. We should also be more responsible, we should not throw our trashes anywhere especially in places near the water like rivers or oceans. In exchange for plastic straws, we can use stainless steel straws that contains no toxins, 100% reusable and 100% recyclable. Government agencies should also focus in this issue because if it doesn't stop, our world will face a very huge problem.
