Dear Sirs,

One shameful event is taking palace in Polonnaruwa, which is affecting the health and well-being of the Elephants who hangout around Flood Plains National Park and city of Kaduruwela.

Municipal councils of Polonnaruwa are using a large block of land in Kaduruwela as dumping grounds of general waste (Non-recyclable plastics, polythene, Packaging Materials and Kitchen Scraps) collected from households and businesses.

This dumping grounds, on one side borders an Electric Fence, set up to divide and protect the city from encroaching Elephants. However it is really strange that dumping is taking the place on the side of the fence inhabited by elephants.

Elephants who have lost their natural feeding grounds are being forced to beg for bounty of this stinky garbage dump. Digging up and munching on rubbish, 14 Elephants that I counted one afternoon and according to many locals it's a better place to spot elephants than world famous Minneriya Reservoir.

Photos show the sad state of these animals and clear evidence of plastic and other poison included in their diet.

Councils surely did not collect these waste from Elephant households and business so why are we marking their territory and then dumping our (human) garbage on their homelands??

Who is responsible for this negligent planning?? Most importantly how are they planning to rectify this issue??

Don't we generate millions of dollars from tourist who come from all corners of earth to see these intelligent and charming animals??

Aren't they a highly praised cultural symbol?? National Treasures??

They deserve better treatment from us, what is your opinion??

As the Honorable President of Sri Lanka you represent not only us humans but also other animals and are obliged to work for the betterment of their well being. Plus this is happening right at the heart of your hometown.

These animals need our help, lets bring some change.
