Many of our foodservice workers at the University of Miami earn barely more than a minimum wage. For many of them, health insurance is unaffordable. Many have little job security and without a union they have no chance to negotiate a fair contract. As members of the University of Miami community, we support those who work hard on our campus in their fight for dignity and fair treatment. As proud Canes we believe that our university has to be held to a higher moral standard. We ask and urge the University of Miami to ensure that all Chartwells workers are able to organize a union without any fear of retaliation and harassment. As the indirect employer of these workers, the University of Miami administration should not sit indifferently by while their workers face unfair working conditions. We believe the University of Miami should openly support the worker's right to form a union and negotiate a fair contract with a living wage and affordable health care options.
