Remove the 60-Day Wellness Break Requirement for Medicare Coverage

Remove the 60-Day Wellness Break Requirement for Medicare Coverage

The Issue

If we are fighting for Medicare for All, we need to fight for Medicare that covers needs regardless of "wellness" status. Currently, even if someone has a qualifying hospital stay (3 nights or longer), if they have already used up their "Medicare Days," their care will not be covered. This is detrimental to those with chronic health conditions who cannot take a 60 day "wellness break" in order to qualify for more coverage.

My mother's case is an example: due to her accident, she is now quadriplegic, and due to this lack of movement, she has a severe wound. Now she is finally on the path for surgery but since she will have used up her Medicare days before she can get in for surgery, her recovery will have to be paid for out-of-pocket.

This is INHUMANE. People should not have to pay for recovery from surgery or care for chronic conditions privately, impoverishing themselves and their families. I call on the US Government to change Medicare coverage rules by permanently removing the 60-day wellness break qualification. Additionally, I call on them to have Medicare cover all skilled services without a limit to the number of days covered. There are people who are suffering because they need skilled care, through no fault of their own, and they cannot afford it. Please change these rules NOW.
