Make Exotic Pets Illegal In Texas!
The Issue
Exotic animals, such as howler monkeys, are constantly being taken as pets when they are young. An exotic pet is an animal kept within human households which is generally thought of as a wild species not typically kept as a pet. This means that animals such as parrots or huskys are not exotic pets, but monkeys and tigers are. However, in order to have a howler monkey, among other species, as an infant, the people selling exotic pets have to kill all of the family members, or the troop, that the monkey is in.
From then it gets worse. The animal may have wounds from stray bullets shot at their troop that will never get treated. The "owner" of the pet also often doesn't know what to do with the animal after they purchase it. For example, they most likely don't have a clue about what the animal eats, what it needs in order to survive, and how to properly care for the animal. After the animal gets too “old” or too “big” to care for, the "owner" may put it in a cage for the rest of its' life, or let it loose in the wild. When they're loose, an animal, as a pet, has seen humans for all of its' life, and doesn't know how to act like an animal, so it may die. Other times, exotic pets can become an invasive species, which are harmful to our ecosystems and the native flora and fauna within them. Even if you knew how to take care of it, it would still be bad for you to own a exotic pet. For example, some things that can happen to the “owner” are..
- He\she could get hurt by the animal if it feels threatened or as the animal matures and its instincts kick in
- If and when the animal runs away the neighborhood or city could be in great danger
- The “owner” could catch a disease from the animal
Sometimes it’s not just the humans, the animals could also get hurt. For example,...
- Animals could develop a disease from the human environment
All of these reasons are points as to why you shouldn't have exotic animals as pets . So help us make it a law to ban exotic pets!
