Bring back Spanish to the Philippines

Bring back Spanish to the Philippines

The Issue

Spanish or Español was once an official language of the Philippines from 1500's until 1987.Even Bonifacio and Aguinaldo's "Republica Filipina" is in Spanish(along with Tagalog). It still remained as the official language along with English during the American Period. The establishment of the 1987 Constitution has accelerated the decline of the language in the Philippines.Currently, the official languages are English and Filipino while Spanish is an optional language.Approximately three percent of the Philippine population can speak a little Spanish. The removal of this language in this country would be devastating to everyone as language has been part of our identities for a long time. Also, Philippines and Morocco are the only countries of the Spanish Empire that didn't adapt Spanish language completely. The vision of this petition is to bring back what we lost and establish equality between languages and dialects in the Philippines.

Our demands:

Make Spanish an official language once again and introduce the Spanish alphabet.

Add Spanish language as a required curriculum from Grade 1 to High School.

Here are some reasons why this petition must be considered:

It is part of our cultural and historical identity.

A lot of words from the Filipino language is borrowed from Spanish language.

One of the widely spoken language like English and mutually intelligible with Portuguese.

Spanish and English has the same patterns but Spanish can be more supple and therefore easier to learn.

Our nation would be open to other countries and better foreign relations.(e.g. Spain and other Latino countries).

Our national identity will improve not just on Asia but also on worldwide community which could open good opportunities for economic and social changes.
