Matthew L. Schwartz, LCSW, MBA, CFSW started this petition to President of Temple Beth Zion and

The petition is to call a Special Meeting. The items mentioned are merely presented as a proposition for discussion and possible voting up or down. Signing the petition does not indicate agreement with any of the points, it means that you are open to having a special congregational meeting to discuss them. As a reminder: anyone can sign this petition, but the only signatures that count toward the 50 for a meeting are adult members of TBZ. Per the bylaws and my understanding, each member household is entitled to two votes (one per adult in the household). All names will be confirmed against Temple Membership before this petition is closed and submitted in the future.

This is a petition signed by Members of Temple Beth Zion in order to call a Special Meeting of the Congregation to address the following:

  1. Discuss the appropriateness of the continued employment of Rabbi Jonathan Freirich in light of new evidence as produced by the Buffalo News and the release of the CCAR Report on Rabbi Freirich and to call for his immediate dismissal;
  2. Introduce a motion for a new by-law mandating that board meetings move forward with radical transparency: that all future board meetings are live-streamed, recorded, and archived moving forward; that Temple business that is funded by congregants not be shielded from congregants or the community, and be easily accessible from the Temple website;
  3. To take a vote of No Confidence of the Current Board;
  4. Motion and Discussion to call upon the board to commit to T'shuva (as adjudicated by an outside adjudicator or rabbinate) based upon their individual actions, or inactions, as it relates to the allegations and findings of the CCAR Report;
  5. Motion and Discussion to call upon the Board to resign their positions and to set a date for new elections should the board choose to not, individually or wholly, choose to take part in T'shuva.

Per the By-Laws: "SPECIAL MEETINGS – Special meetings of the members of the Congregation may be called at any time by the President or the Board, or shall be called by the President or the Secretary upon the written request of fifty members. The written request shall state the purpose or purposes of the meeting, and shall be delivered to the Secretary of the Congregation. Notice of each special meeting of the members shall state the purpose or purposes for which the meeting is called. The place and time of the meeting hall be given to members by mailing at least ten days prior to the date of such meeting, or as permitted by law. Only the business stated in the notice shall be conducted at a special meeting."
