Remove "in Extension Studies" from Harvard Extension School Degree names
The Issue
We the undersigned Harvard students request a formal meeting with Harvard President Lawrence Bacow to discuss student concerns over the "in Extension Studies" part of the degree name at Harvard Extension School.
Harvard Extension School is a place where students from all corners of the globe and all walks of life come together in pursuit of VERITAS. HES is the largest school at Harvard with a student body of over 16,000 (https://www.harvard.edu/about-harvard/harvard-glance but it is often treated as persona non grata. This mistreatment is especially apparent in the degrees awarded to both undergraduate students and graduate students. HES students are simply looking to be treated as equals when it comes to degrees awarded by Harvard. Much of the coursework that HES students complete in pursuit of their degrees is identical to the coursework completed by Harvard students in the other degree-granting schools. As the work is virtually identical, HES students request that the degree be identical as well. If Harvard leadership has a valid reason for continuing the different name, HES students would simply like an explanation of the leadership's stance.
By signing this petition, you are asking Harvard University to recognize the hard work by Harvard Students at HES by naming their degrees in a traditional fashion, just as is the case for the other schools at Harvard.
