Larry Summers is unfit to lead the World Bank

President Obama is considering appointing someone to lead the World Bank who, seven years to the day that this story broke, stated that he believes that women are “innately” less able to understand science and math than men.

That’s right: Larry Summers, a former White House economic advisor and President of Harvard University, thinks so little of women that he believes, without a shred of evidence, that women are less fit than men to excel in science and math.

Tell President Obama: Don’t appoint Larry Summers to lead the World Bank.

Not only did Summers help drive the U.S. economy into the ditch, but for President Obama to even consider appointing someone with such blatantly sexist beliefs to lead the World Bank is not only shocking, but flies in the face of the work his administration has done to increase participation of women and girls in professions related to science and math.

What’s even more surprising is that President Obama is considering appointing someone who thinks so little of women’s ability to head an organization that has recently drastically increased efforts to empower women financially in developing countries—often through loans for women to begin businesses.

We can’t afford to have a president of the World Bank who doesn’t believe in the equality of women. What’s more, these crucial programs to empower women in the developing world would be in jeopardy with someone like Larry Summers at the helm.

Tell President Obama: Don’t appoint Larry Summers to lead the World Bank.

As the father of two daughters, we know that President Obama believes in equality for women, and thinks that women are just as able to excel and math and science as men.  But the president of the World Bank is an incredibly important position—and appointing someone who openly states that he doesn’t think women are fully equal to men in every way would send the wrong message to Americans and the rest of the world.

If we make Larry Summers' sexist comments a public issue it's more likely that President Obama, who as a proud dad wants his two daughters to have the same opportunities as someone else's sons, will think twice before appointing Summers to the World Bank presidency.

Tell President Obama: Don’t appoint Larry Summers to lead the World Bank.

Letter to
President Obama
I urge you not to appoint Larry Summers as the president of the World Bank. His belief that women can’t learn math and science as well as men is unfounded and sexist. We can’t jeopardize the advances of women in the U.S. and all over the world by appointing Larry Summers to lead the World Bank.
