Hold U of L accountable for their negligence in campus crime and sexual assault

The Issue

The University of Louisville has time and time again been negligent when it comes to the safety of its students--and the young women of our campus are specifically threatened. If sophomores and freshman are required to live on campus or campus affiliated housing, then it needs to be safe.

We need to urge President Neeli, campus security, ULPD, and LMPD to do better. This campus is, frankly put, unsafe and unwelcoming to feminine-presenting students.

We urge the above listed authorities to respond to these demands:

1. Implement an honest and timely RAVE alert system. RAVE alerts are of no use when delivered hours after the incident. RAVE alerts are of no use when they label an event as an "armed robbery" when it was a sexual assault. RAVE alerts are of no use when they are not sent to notify repeated sexual assaults. At this point, are RAVE alerts of any use? The University of Louisville undoubtedly knows it is being dishonest with the content of its RAVE alerts and undoubtedly is cognizant of its omissions.

2. Seriously implement measures of campus safety. Campus security efforts are lackadaisical and half-hearted. If there are assaults against women at night, then the university needs to provide a safe way to get home--that does not take over 30 minutes. Campus security needs to be both alert and diligent. U of L has enough funds to secure safe and timely transportation for its students. The safety of the women that go here is worth it.

3. Change the requirements of campus housing--or make it safer. Campus affiliated housing is unsafe; locks are easily picked, key fobs can easily be programmed, and gates are left wide open. It is unjust that the administration limits the autonomy of students by making them live in these unsafe conditions. Students deserve the choice of living in a safe environment. Pick one or the other: either mandate students to live in a safe housing unit or do not mandate it at all.

The University of Louisville continually disappoints its students and the administration shows it does not care about safety. We urge you to implement these demands into campus security measures and rules. Do better, Neeli. Do better, ULPD. Do better. If you also support these changes, please sign.

I love U of L. I would not want to go to school anywhere else. But, as a woman, I am confined to loving it only during the day.

Begrudgingly,

L1C4
