On March 26, 2020 ESU students received an e-mail from President Welsh announcing the cancellation of Spring 2020 commencement due to the COVID-19 outbreak. President Welsh also states in her e-mail that Spring 2020 graduates have the opportunity to walk in December 2020 with those graduates. Seniors are devastated. This is a time that we will never get back that has already been ruined by cancellations and moving to a remote learning experience. We understand that the measures taken are necessary, but we feel as though we deserve our own commencement. If Spring 2020 graduates and Winter 2020 graduates were to walk together, this would cause an unnecessarily long ceremony, an uncomfortably crammed fieldhouse (with possibly not enough tickets), and a less special experience for both sets of graduates. The purpose of this petition is to propose the idea of a commencement during the summer months for the Spring 2020 graduates. With a commencement in the summer instead of waiting til December, Spring 2020 and Winter 2020 graduates would get their own special day with ample room and an appropriately timed ceremony. Whether you are an ESU student, family member of a student, or just someone that supports the cause, your signature and support are appreciated.
