Change Walsh Jesuit's Offensive "Warriors" Name & Mascot

The Issue

As Walsh Jesuit students, teachers, alumni and other members of the community, we're asking Walsh Jesuit High School to change its team name, mascot and logo from the Warriors to something else as soon as possible to respect Native people.

For years, Native activists have petitioned and demanded that more visible teams, like the Cleveland Indians, change their names and logos to respect Native people and history. Finally, this year, teams have begun to listen and have started to review their names and logos. It's time for Walsh Jesuit to live up to its values of conscience and compassion by selecting a new name, mascot and logo. The school's longtime motto, "Men and Women for Others," should act as a guide for the school's decision.

We are encouraged that Walsh has begun a conversation about its branding and mascot and has enlisted a marketing team to address the issue. We urge Walsh and the marketing team to recognize that nothing less than fully changing the team name, mascot and logo is appropriate -- a minor adjustment, like the Indians attempted by using Chief Wahoo less often, does not eliminate the offensiveness of the team name, logo and mascot. Walsh's spear logo similarly cannot eliminate the offensiveness of the name and mascot. We hope that Walsh will do the right thing for our community and a more compassionate world without waiting for a greater community outcry.
