26K Signatures!

Wow, you guys! I am floored at the response of over 25K signatures OVER NIGHT! Please keep sharing the petition to friends and family so we can spread awareness about the real facts: The majority of Americans REALLY do stand with Indigenous People and would like to see our government do the same.

To clear some things up:

For a long time, excuses were made that on a Federal level this holiday wasn’t changed because it would disrupt businesses and unions in their observance of a Holiday day. This is why I’ve given the SOLUTION of merely REPLACING Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day. That way there is still a holiday observed, but not glorifying and centering the conversation on Christopher Columbus, who, AGAIN- DID NOT EVER step foot on U.S. soil. 

Those of you who are in the comments saying that he never raped, enslaved, or brutalized indigenous caribbean’s are fundamentally INCORRECT. 

The internet exists. It is very easy to simple research independently the facts regarding Christopher Columbus. Historians have all agreed that Christopher Columbus was one of the world’s most successful failures - but what we don’t center the conversation is how his explorations opened the door to a much bigger problem. A problem regarding race, colonization, colorism and beyond that society is JUST NOW talking about in real ways on social media. 

No proof Columbus and his brothers and crew raped Indigenous Caribbean’s? Please research your history. And even if you don’t, the multiple colors that Latinos come in are living proof of colonization. The nearly extinct Taino indians are proof of disease and abuse. Not only did Columbus take part in this ravenous behavior (which had been a normal practice of colonization) but his brothers and crew did, too. The Spanish are guilty of these practices which is why “colonization” has a negative connotation to it. Colonization has always meant the good and bad that has come from it - and recognizing October 12th as Indigenous People’s Day will help our youth know an ACCURATE account of history. Anyone who doesn’t want factual history presented to their youth stands with the oppressor and not with the oppressed. 
This petition may upset a lot of people, but those are people that don’t have the critical thinking skills and facts to realize how important this step is for our society to take. We’ve known the truth for long enough, let’s make a change!

Most importantly, thank you for standing alongside Latino, African-American, and Native American people by acknowledging how hurtful it is to us to continue to celebrate Christopher Columbus. I believe in America and I believe the ones with the most power is THE PEOPLE! And “we” can accomplish this together! ��
