Monthly Local 308 Steward Classes

Monthly Local 308 Steward Classes
The Issue
We, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308 members—and supporters—listed below require the following of President Eric Dixon immediately:
- We demand he give EVERY member an opportunity to become Union Stewards—as per Section 23 of the Local 308 bylaws—through monthly steward classes at given to members who apply on a first-come-first-serve basis for the duration of his term as our president.
- We demand he stick to his original requirement of first-come-first-serve. NOT his last-minute decision to personally select who can be in the classes. This reeks of discrimination, favoritism and promotes division.
- We demand that records of who applied by date/time must be made public. This can be done by listing the partial email address with all personal information redacted, such as myemail*****@aol.com. This will help members determine if they were discriminated against by him or the Secretary-Treasurer.
- We demand documentation to back up why he changed head count from 35-30 for the March 13th class at 750 S. Halsted (UIC Student Center).
- We demand online registration for convenience of the members. The current email-printout-sign-and-email-back process is confusing and inconvenient for some. No SIGNATURE should be required, as that can compromise the members' security.
- We demand that locations of the classes cannot be secret. Members should know where the classes are and if there is a vacancy, they should be welcome to attend.
- We demand live-streaming AND/OR Online On-Demand Recordings of each class.
- Most importantly, we demand that President Dixon open up a "Steward Committee" in which a democratically-chosen group of at least 5 rank-and-file members—not officers—will help President Dixon create a robust Steward program that is accountable, saves the Local money and establishes a goal of a 20:1 worker-to-steward ratio. This committee will be responsible to survey the membership to ensure classes are useful, conveniently located, surveys are executed and shared publicly and schedules are published no less than 30 days in advance.
