WHAT THE US NEEDS TO DO FOR 545 ORPHANS IT CREATED
The issue
The apparently irrevocable separation of 545 children from their families at the Mexican border as a matter of policy, is evidence of crimes against humanity. More-over,these involuntary child separations reflect on all of us, the citizens of the US. The damage done, in addition to the stain on our national escutcheon and our standing in the world, limits our role in standing -up for human rights in other countries. But fundamentally the harm that this continues to exert on these children, their present lives and their future is beyond acceptability. We must do all we can to ameliorate the damage that we continue to do to these children by our evident inability to unite them with responsible family members of theirs. We must accept responsibility for them and their well-being. They were taken from their families in all our names. In effect, now, they are ours. We are their family now. The new administration should grant the 545 children US citizenship and create a fund sufficient for their care and upbringing, including their education.
