Meet your funding commitments with Enginyeria Sense Fronteres

We, social justice organizations and members of the global water justice movement, are writing to urge the Catalan government to deliver its committed funding associated to the projects of Enginyeria Sense Fronteres de Catalunya (ESF). ESF is almost unique in bridging the technical and systems approach of engineers to crucial social and environmental issues.
We acknowledge the critical situation of the Catalan and Spanish governments but we urge you not to discontinue international cooperation and solidarity. The ESF has become an integral part of a global network, and their defunding and subsequent disappearance will cause significant loss to the movement. We also urge the Catalan government to pay up its debts with other social organizations in Catalunya.
Through the ESF, the Catalan government has made a significant contribution to the global campaign for the right to water and sanitation for the past 15 years and for this reason we thank you sincerely. ESF’s research, analysis and advocacy on water have increased our understanding and awareness of key issues in the sector. Further, ESF has played a key role and leadership in the European Water Network and the right to water movement, contributing to the July 2010 adoption and recognition of the right to water and sanitation by the United Nations General Assembly. Their work in UN Habitat’s Water Operators’ Partnership Alliance has helped to ground theoretical work in operational realities.
At a time of environmental and economic crises, we face many challenges in the progressive realization and implementation of the human right to water and sanitation across the globe. We firmly believe and regret that the de-funding of a key and unique partner will have a negative impact on our work. Now more than ever, we need the continued commitment of ESF in furthering the work on implementing the right to water and sanitation.
We therefore collectively appeal and urge you to continue to play the central role that the Catalan government and ESF have played on the global stage by restoring funding to this vital Catalan organization.
