UCF Must Respond to Nazi Propaganda
The Issue
Last fall, UCF saw several instances of Nazi propaganda taped up across campus, as well as instances where anti-Semitic, racist, anti-LGBTQ+, and anti-Black speakers spewed hateful rhetoric targeting students as they walked on their way to class. This past weekend, there were also multiple Nazi actions across the Central Florida area, some of which were very close to UCF's campus. However, we have heard nothing from UCF's Board of Directors or President Cartwright on this issue; yet, UCF claims to be an institution that supports diversity and inclusion.
Hate speech, like the Nazi rhetoric from this weekend, or the filth that speakers spill across campus is not free speech and is not allowed under the First Amendment. Therefore, we demand that UCF:
- Condemns Nazi rhetoric and actions going forward.
- Provide extensive, FREE counseling to students who have been affected by this violence.
- Host open discussions across camps that center students of color and discuss the negative impacts that Nazi rhetoric and hate speech has on our campus community.
Remember, the Nazis were able to succeed in murdering 6 million Jews, gay people, disabled people, and people of color because neighbors didn’t stand up for one another and call out this rhetoric.
We urge President Cartwright and the UCF Board of Directors stand up against this hateful rhetoric and make campus a safe place for all.
“We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference.” -Elie Wiesel
