History: For countless generations the most sacred mountaintop in the Black Hills of South Dakota, was known to the Lakota People as "Hinhan Kaga Paha" (Great Owls Nest). This place is also where Lakota Holy Man, Black Elk had his "Great Vision" when he was 9 years old.
In the late 1850's, it was named "Harney Peak" in honor of General William Selby Harney. In 1855 at Blue Water Creek, Nebraska, Harney attacked the peaceful village of Little Thunder, killing 86 Lakota, many were woman and children. Crazy Horse was a young boy in that camp and witnessed the horror. Harney also became a designer and primary signer of the dishonored Ft. Laramie Treaty of 1868. Seven generations later, we are petitioning for the Harney name to be removed from this sacred site.
We realize to the Lakota elders this peak will always been known as Hinhan Kaga, but we would like to honor the formal change on maps and signage, especially for the youth of the next seven generations.
PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION, help us Honor the Treaties today.
