As many Americans are unaware, November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance. This day’s goal is to give awareness to all of those who have suffered violent deaths due to their actual or perceived gender identity or expression. The first memorial was a candle vigil in November 1999 to honor the death of Rita Hester, murdered in 1998. Today, this day is celebrated by many groups that consist of transgender individuals and their allies.
We, people who are part of the Trans* community and allies of the transgender community, petition the White House and its staff, in an effort to increase awareness of those who have been killed because of their gender or perceived gender/expression, to raise the transgender pride flag to half-mast on November 20th 2013 and on all consecutive November 20ths.
