Lets stop unnecessary college student deaths

Lets stop unnecessary college student deaths
The Issue
On November 25, 2013, my son Adam was hit by a car going 35 miles per hour on the main street that divides the Allegheny College campus. Adam suffered a broken fibula and a broken tibia but lived. The speed limit on this street is 35 miles per hour. After the accident, Allegheny College officials were strongly advised to do something to make that stretch of road safe. Nothing changed. Appallingly, on Thursday October 29th Hannah Morris, an Allegheny College junior, was struck and killed on the same road, two blocks from where Adam was hit. The road continues to remain open and the speed limit continues to be 35 miles per hour. Without change, it is foreseeable that more students may die.
We ask that:
The President and Board of Trustees take such action as is necessary to stop student deaths on the Allegheny College campus by closing Main Street or demanding that the speed limit be fixed at 15 miles per hour everywhere on campus,
The City of Meadville, Pennsylvania, close Main Street on the Allegheny Campus or reduce the speed limit to 15 miles per hour - and enforce that limit,
The National Highway Safety Board and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation promulgate regulations specifying college campus roads and highways are school zones are subject to safety regulations including 15 mile per hour speed limits.
Student deaths on campus should never occur.
