TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY MEASURES AND DECREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF CAR CRUSHES

The Issue

Road traffic crashes are the second leading cause of death globally among young people aged 5 to 29 years and the third leading cause of death among people aged 30 to 55 years. Road traffic crashes kill 1.2 million people every year and injure or disable as many as 50 million more.

Yet, reports don’t tell the full story. Behind each statistic there is a story of a father or mother, son or daughter, brother or sister, grandchild, colleague, classmate or friend whose life was transformed in an instant by a road crash.

We are currently writting a book about victims and their families. It is a collection of many stories told by people who lost loved ones or who were themselves involved in road crashes. It is tribute to Dad, WALI DAUD EGAL AND all the beautiful lives lost in car crashes.

These stories will reflect the devastation – physical, psychological, emotional and economic , resulting from a single road crash. They will deepen our understanding of the enormous suffering behind statistical figures we see in our traffic reports every year.

Many of the stories show that if prevention measures and emergency rescue services had been in place, an enormous amount of suffering could have been avoided.

"His body was severly damaged, so they had to burry him immediately. He was thrilled to go back home. He called me immediately after landing berbera airport and told me his welcoming mini party. It turned out that he didn't even get a chance to see his grannies and the rest of the family in burao. If my son was putting on seat belt, he would have survived."
--Yonis, Father of muxumad.(victim's father).

"My father-in-law died in a car accident, the day his son was getting married. He escorted his son to the city for shopping and son-father time together. Little did we know, that we will have funeral instead of wedding. It was a "Horrible day". I feel bad for my brother inlaw and his wife. --Hodo ali geedi.( Victim's daughter inlaw)

"His hard work, dedication and commitment were not limited only to the family. He nurtured us the patriotism for our country and he died while serving the nation. Am proud son, dad "
--Suhayb Wali, Son of Wali Daud
(Victim's son)

* Leila when are you going back home country?
"I tried but i started grieving all over again that my parents had to bring me back. Everything is a reminder of him. His friends, shops, suuqi hoose (down town), hanging out areas. Basically everything. I miss him very badly. I don't know but I avoid talking about that topic. It hurts whenever i hear a car accident."
--Leila mohamed ahmed.( Victim's wife)

"True, he was another reckless boy to them but i lost irreplaceable angel because of his recklessness. I still get bewilded thinking that the reckless boy and the likes of him are behind the wheel of a car, somewhere cruising and not too long will he couse the same damage he has done to us"
--Nimo wali, daughter of Wali Daud(Victim's Daughter)

"I heard the strong application of brakes, followed by loud noise. I rushed outside the store too see what happened. It was white crown which hit one of the pavements in the road. The two tinny boys inside were struggling to open one of the windows to get out of the car. After they were gotten out of the car, they told people who were around, that it was their sister's car and they escaped with it. It hit me hard that my son is like them. I had to send him to driving school in that followin morning, otherwise they will bring him servely wounded or worse, dead. He is now a very good driver. I believe trainings are the solution."
-- Amina Yusuf, Mother Of liban warsame.

"Can you imagine they stole the car and it was traffic officers who called me and informed me about the collision. They were fine and were detained in the police station. I didn't bailed them out, neither did my wife. I told her not to. It is learning not punishing,15days in the cell and still counting more."
--Dhego, father of 3 minor casualties.

"He was a father like no other. He will talk to each one of us in our different way and we will all say yes he is my bestie. I pray everyday that God forgives and have mercy on him as he had taken care and had mercy on me and my siblings. Not all accidents are accidents. The one who took my dad and many others weren't accidents. They were as result of recklessness and they shouldn't have happened in the first place. They shouldn't ever happen again."
--Isra Wali, daughter of Wali Daud (Victim's Daughter)

"He use to take night walks Every night after work. It was his way of relaxing from a long hectic day. Around 1:30 a.m, mum sent ali, our eldest brother to check him from the nearby shops. Sadly, Ali Called us to inform us the funeral plans and the transportation of the body."
--Saynab nuur, daughter of nuur maxamed. (Victim's daughter)

"I lost my brother in a car crash two days after my father. I don't know which one was harder, loosing my father or loosing my only brother and my second closest man after my father. I didn't know which one to grieve first for. I don't have a father, neither a brother now. I wonder why is this world so cruel that i had to loose the only two male figures in my life . Am no longer who i use to be. Speed killed my brother."
--Fosiya Abdirahman, sister of jibril (victim's sister)

"I wish he was still with us, But you know some wishes are just wishes. Car accident snatched him away from us and i terribly miss him. The last memories i had with him was the night before the day he passed away, i remember me and mahda curling his hair and he was Laughing at our silliness. He was more than a dad, he was our best friend. I remember me putting on his clothes after they confirmed us the incident. I kept thinking this cann't be true. Still part of me doesn't believe anything that happened last year."
-- Deka wali, Daughter of Wali Daud(Victim's daughter)

"It was very fast. I didn't know what was happening! The car kept turning and glasses kept shuttering and then boom everything turned dark. I haven't driven still and i don't know how long it will take me to go behind the wheel. Scarry."
--Abdito, survivor of car crash.

"I stopped playing skipping ropes cause it was a reminder of my daddy and it was traumatizing knowing he wonn't play with me anymore but mummy encouraged me to do it and am back full time now. I even use his rope for skipping ropes. I was his happy bill. If he is very angry and he sees me, he would cool down immediately. I was also his personal secretary. I knew everything in his life. I would even go with him in some of his meetings and that is how i got to know most of daddy's friends. I know my dad is in better place now and inshAllah am going to see him in jannah. After what happened to him, I fear trucks and If the car is over speeding, i always close my eyes and try to sleep. "
--Mahda Wali,Youngest Born of wali Daud (Victim's last born)

"I drive carefully now. I don't over speed anymore. She almost died infront of me and to make matter worse, people were pulling her here and there. Am glad she is still alive. I would have never forgiven myself if she had died.
--samatar Yusuf
