Preserve Trowbridge's Tree for Future Generations – Halt the Council's Plan

The Issue

SAVE THIS ICONIC TREE

We the undersigned implore Wiltshire County Council to reconsider their plan to cut down this iconic tree.

Wiltshire Council are planning to cut down this beautiful tree at the corner of County Way and Roundstone Street and asphalt the grassed area around it, to make the town more “accessible” to pedestrians and cyclists. How is this a good idea? Environmentally? Ecologically? For the sake of making Trowbridge more attractive or appealing? No, because it is in the way of a zebra crossing! Surely, the crossing could be moved a few feet to save this tree.

Roundstone tree in the Snow

One of the most delightful things about this tree, a whitebeam, is the way it highlights the seasons. Right now in autumn, it is full of red berries. Not only do they fill the tree with colour, but the birds love them. They provide winter food for so many. The leaves are changing now, adding to the appeal. In winter the tree's structure marks the entrance into the town with strong, pleasing branches.

Spring is the highlight of this wonderful tree. As the new leaves emerge, they bathe the tree in silvery green. Many people tell me this is their favourite time of the year to see this tree. One 80 year-old says the spring foliage on this tree makes it his all-time favourite. After the leaves fully open, the tree is covered in small white flowers. Once again, the tree is contributing to nature with pollen for bees and other insects.

Throughout the year, this Trowbridge tree contributes to the beauty of the town; welcoming all who come in from the east. It helps clean the air and feed the environment. How can Wiltshire Council even consider destroying it?

The zebra crossing causing all the trouble is planned to go almost at the roundabout on County Way. Surely the Council can move the zebra crossing a few feet down Roundstone Street so the tree doesn't need to come down.
