Preserve Transgender Landmark STAR House in Loisaida

Preserve Transgender Landmark STAR House in Loisaida
The Issue
Growing up in a repressive Orthodox Jewish environment, I quietly explored my gender identity, feeling neglected by my own family and community in the 90s and 2000s. There were no visible LGBTQ+ organizations in the neighborhood to turn to for support. Only in late college did I learn about the historical significance of STAR House, situated just a few blocks away from my mother's apartment, and Sylvia Rivera's involvement with the Young Lords Party while I was reporting and curating an exhibit at Loisaida Inc.
Today, as a member of the Loisaida community and someone who identifies as queer/trans, I am deeply concerned about the rapid gentrification occurring in our neighborhood and the ongoing attacks on trans rights nationally. It's disheartening to see important landmarks like STAR House at 213 E 2nd Street - the first major trans shelter and justice center, founded by trans icons Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera - being forgotten.
Preserving STAR House is critical to honor the legacy of the leaders who fought tirelessly to establish this historic site for the trans community. Despite significant efforts, this site has never been recognized as a citywide landmark, leaving it vulnerable to erasure.
We must act now to ensure that the powerful legacy of STAR House lives on for future generations. The voices and contributions of Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and other pioneers should not be lost amidst the wave of gentrification. By securing landmark status, we can protect this beacon of trans history and continue to inspire current and future generations of activists and community members.
Join me in urging the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to recognize STAR House as a landmark. Let's honor the trailblazers who paved the way for our community and ensure that their legacy is preserved. Sign this petition to make a meaningful impact on the preservation of LGBTQ+ history in Loisaida and beyond. <3 Mx.Enigma
