Preserve the Traditional Wall of Fame at Mattoon High School
The Issue
Mattoon High School in Illinois hosts a wall of fame, which is a testament to our town's history and the pride we take in our local athletes’ achievements. This wall has inspired generation after generation, instilling a sense of aspiration in our young individuals.
Recently, an initiative to replace this physical wall with an electronic one has sparked concern within our community. This isn’t merely a cosmetic change, it's a loss of a part of our town's heritage.
Additionally, the electronic version currently in place is non-functioning. This out of service TV as pictured above is the current digitized form of the wall of fame, with the most recent inductees receiving no recognition for their accomplishments. Nevertheless, if the electronic wall of fame were to be functioning, a case study performed at the University of Washington underlines this point, stating that physical halls of fame in colleges resulted in better student motivation compared to when they were digitized (Johansson, Mckain, & Hodges, 2019).
Whilst we understand and respect the efforts being made to modernize aspects of the school, we implore the local high school leadership to reconsider their decision. Let us not forget, tradition plays a crucial role in fostering community spirit and identity. It's not just a wall - it's a symbol of our town's pride, history, and the accomplishments of many generations.
The Physical walls of fame have proven to be effective tools in schools, nurturing a sense of ambition and community spirit in students. There is ample space among adjoining hallways to expand the current wall of fame in the future. According to a study conducted by the University of Michigan, tangible recognition holds significant value in positively influencing youth achievement and motivation. Let's not let a part of our cultural legacy be replaced by a non-functioning electronic alternative. Our future generations deserve the inspiration that the wall of fame traditionally offered. Sign the petition to let our voices be heard and preserve the Wall of Fame as a physical entity at Mattoon High School.
