Preserve the sanctity of Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa
The Issue
I am writing to express a deeply personal concern regarding the current state and management of Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa—a place that holds profound significance for myself and many others in our community. Among those laid to rest here is my beloved infant son, and like countless others, I wish to uphold the peace and dignity they deserve in their eternal rest.
Riverside Cemetery is meant to be a sacred place, a haven of tranquility and reverence. However, recent activities scheduled on the premises, such as hosting a coffee truck and remaining open until as late as 10:00 p.m., threaten the serenity and respect that should define this space. These events risk transforming the cemetery from a site of solemn remembrance to one of social gatherings, undermining its purpose and the values we cherish.
Additionally, the current state of the grounds is a growing concern. Maintenance issues, including overdue mowing, trimming, and general upkeep, are glaringly apparent. The focus seems misplaced, with priorities drifting towards pets, geese, and public entertainments rather than the respectful maintenance of the cemetery's sanctity.
Our loved ones who have passed on no longer have a voice, and it is our responsibility to advocate for their right to rest in peace. Many community members share these sentiments but are hesitant to express their concerns. This highlights the urgent need for action to preserve the dignity and sanctity of Riverside Cemetery.
I am calling on the management and board of Riverside Cemetery to take the necessary steps to address these issues. The cemetery gates should close at dusk consistently, ensuring that the premise does not become a venue for activities that disrupt the peace. Vendors, including food/drink trucks should be prohibited. Furthermore, I urge a renewed commitment to maintaining the grounds, keeping them well-manicured and dignified, befitting the sacredness of the space.
I implore all who respect the importance of honoring our loved ones in their final resting place to join me in this effort. Let us protect and preserve Riverside Cemetery's sanctity for the sake of our ancestors and the community at large. Please sign this petition to show your support and demand the necessary changes.
