The Issue

When we bought and built our homes along Sullivan Rd in minneola Florida, we adhered to a requirement of maintaining a minimum of 5 acres per homestead. This zoning law was not just a rule; it was a promise of preserving the rural character that drew many families to this area. We have invested our lives and livelihoods here, running a hydroponic farm, a nursery, and tending to horses, chickens, and pigs. The spacious lots and serene environment have provided a haven for our agricultural endeavors and family life.

However, this tranquility is now under threat. Plans have been approved to build 700 affordable housing apartments right at the boundary of our properties. The development does not include a wall or any barrier, drastically changing the landscape and introducing elements that are out of character with our rural setting. High-density residential complexes such as apartments, duplexes, and multi-family units will disrupt the peaceful, sustainable lifestyle that we've nurtured for decades.

The current zoning laws require that any family lot split have a minimum of 1 acre per single-family home. It's critical to maintain these standards to safeguard our community's rural identity. Reverting or modifying these laws to accommodate denser housing will not only diminish property values but also strain local resources, increase traffic, and alter the quiet, pastoral nature that is so valued by the residents.

Statistics indicate that rural areas like ours have lower crime rates and a sense of community that is unparalleled, largely due to the space and connection to nature. Compact housing developments could potentially disturb this balance, leading to unforeseen social and environmental impacts.

We urge city planners and local authorities to reject any proposals that compromise the rural zoning requirements of Sullivan Rd. Maintaining the integrity of our zoning laws ensures that the charm and appeal of our community are not eroded by urban sprawl.

Please sign this petition to protect the rural integrity and quality of life in our beloved Sullivan Rd community. Let us stand together to ensure our homes remain as the peaceful sanctuaries we all cherished when we first decided to lay down roots here.
