I have witnessed the commendable work our safer school police officers perform in London's schools. They build beneficial relationships with students and often intervene in situations of danger to protect our children. However, their future in our schools is under threat.

Met police propose removing these officers, ignoring the critical role they play in maintaining a safe school environment. The presence of SSO's in London schools have dwindled over the years. If we continue along this trajectory, I fear for the security of our children.

The positive effects of an integral police presence in schools have been documented. A study by the Educational Policy Institute found that school police foster a culture of security that supports academic success, with some noticeable improvements in school attendance rates (Educational Policy Institute, 2018).

We must not forget that these officers not only guarantee physical security but also provide emotional support to students by building trusting relationships. Therefore, these measures to remove school police will undoubtedly affect our children's overall wellbeing.

The commissioner has promised more community policing but this does not appear to be the case, taking away the officers that build positive relationships in the heart of the community, schools.
