Preserve the precious Wildlife and Habitat at Pasture Marsh Wirral
The Issue
UPDATE : At a meeting of the Policy and Resources Committee in February 2026 the decision to sell the land for housing development has was RESCINDED by councillors.
The Chief Executive of Wirral Council has been requested to bring forward a report to a future meeting of the Environment, Climate Change and Transport Committee (June?) with a view to explore options for regarding implementation for the Ditton Lane Moreton Site as set out in the emerging Local Nature Recovery Strategy of the Liverpool City Region.
Whilst this is a big victory which means any development on the privately owned adjoining site is highly unlikely, this petition will continue until we have permanent and lasting protections in place.
UPDATE : WIRRAL COUNCIL HAVE PUT THIS LAND UP FOR SALE.
Local residents were not informed of this decision by the council.
It is our understanding that the council only own approximately 25% of the land for sale. It appears they have collaborated with the private landowners to maximise development potential of the entire area.
We believe this goes against both their own local policy and indeed national policy of a presumption against greenfield development.
WIRRAL COUNCIL HAVE DENIED A REQUEST BY CHESHIRE WILDLIFE ACCESS TO THE MARSH TO CONDUCT A STUDY.
This petition has been created with a view to protecting the Marshland and wildlife habitat situated at the top corner of Leasowe Road and Pasture Road on the Wirral Peninsula.
It is a beautiful area attracting many bird species, there is also a considerable bat population in the local area which feed over the Marsh.
Also, this land is a flood water storage area and it is underwater for much of the year, residents are concerned that any permitted development on this land would endanger the existing properties within the flood zone as the land is part of the flood defence strategy for Leasowe. Predicted climate change heightens the risk posed.
The Wirral Council has proposed that as part of the Wirral's New Local Plan the designation of this land has be changed to 'Residential', and House builders have apparently already expressed interest in development.
We disagree with this designation and request that the land be afforded protection from any development by inclusion in the existing nature reserve at Ditton lane.
We also submit that there is an existing substantial housing development taking place on the old Cadbury's Factory site where there are plans for a substantial number of houses, this concentrated increase in population will inevitably lead to further pressures on local infrastructure such as GP's, Dentists, Schools and Hospitals. These pressures should not be exacerbated by any further development.
