I ’m closing this petition but wanted to thank all of our supporters. Annandale has a wonderful community, and the pickleball community, in particular, has been amazing. Through my experience with the Kendale Woods Park pickleball courts, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many incredible people, and for that, I’m truly grateful.
I also want to pass along some important information regarding the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) that goes beyond the pickleball community. One thing our situation has made clear is that more transparency is needed within FCPA to ensure tax dollars are used in a way that best serves the community. Personally, I don’t believe the current structure or leadership is serving the people effectively, and I encourage anyone who feels the same to raise their voice and call for changes to this system. Jai Cole needs to go- how on Earth she got her position is beyond comprehension.
Here are some notes that were shared with me regarding the proposed 2026 budget cuts:
Feedback on the Fairfax County Park Authority Board’s Proposed FY26 Budget Reductions:
FCPA should have listed all potential options: The level of detail in the FY25 budget makes it difficult for the public to weigh in on all potential alternatives FCPA might have considered. Rather than sharing the options FCPA weighed when bringing forward these proposed cuts, the public is left reacting to only the cuts they proposed, many of which are concerning. Can FCPA identify other options it did not propose, and explain why these particular cuts were chosen?
FCPA outcomes already lag behind neighboring areas: FCPA’s service is already lacking (e.g., delayed mowing, playgrounds in disrepair, etc.), especially compared to nearby areas like Arlington and DC, which have invested in world-class parks. Some may argue that FCPA simply needs more funding from the Board of Supervisors (BOS).
Increase FCPA funding but with new governance: I support increased funding for park programming, but only if the BOS replaces the opaque Park Authority structure with a county-run parks department, as seen in neighboring jurisdictions. Over my 15+ years as a Mason District resident, I’ve witnessed FCPA make decisions and use funds without accountability. The leadership is unresponsive to the community and has failed to demonstrate how existing funds are being used.
Residents can provide feedback on the budget recommendations via email or mail through Sept. 11. You may also attend the Park Authority Board’s budget committee meeting on Sept. 11 at 5:45 p.m., either in person at the 9th floor of the Herrity Building (12055 Government Center Parkway) or via Zoom.
On a personal note, Danny and I played in a great tournament today in Anne Arundel County, where we won gold in our division. For those of you who know us, you know this is a big deal, as I’m way too competitive to play with Danny without it affecting our marriage! Thank you for your support in keeping community spaces accessible to residents, and keep on playing. Pickle on friends!
